Starting 1999 AlphaBoySchool's musical maxim has allways been "Ska is back in town". Accordingly they brought the Ska back to the "Ruhr-Town" (that's say about the agglomaration of towns between Duisburg and Dortmund). This is what biologists say about Alpha:
"Alpha" connotes top ranking in some kind of hierarchy, so an alpha wolf is by definition the top-ranking wolf. Because among wolves in captivity the hierarchies are gender-based, there are an alpha male and an alpha female (Schenkel 1947, more).
Ok, that's not where the name of the band came from nor is their music wolf-like, but if you've got time to whatch'em go see'em. And these are the people you're going to find on stage: Andi Jansen (trombone), Christof Schnelle (guitar, organ, vocals), Dirk Heinrich (bass), Karsten Riedel (vocals, guitar, organ), Rolf Hartung (saxophone), Sebastian Diel SeDi (trumpet), Sven Nowoczyn (drums, vocals), Thorsten Kindermann Toddy (saxophone).

Steven Satisfied Maclean a.k.a. (Sticko) who's roots are from Surinam, came from the roots, as his father was also the leader of a very large steelband in the show business. At age nine he had his first live performance playing alongside his father who's song just became nr 1 in the dutch hitparades by the titel of : (January- february) The Calendersong. After years of experience playing Soca and Calipso, Sticko then was inspired by the music of Bob Marley and the Wailers. From this his connection to reggae musicians just kept growing. Lionel Bingie Barker was born in Kingston, Jamaica. The son of calypso king Lord Jellicoe and choir singer Esmie, Barker began his singing career as a child, first in the school choir at St. Anne's Infant and Primary schools (Western Kingston) and then joining his mother's church choir. A normal, though slightly mischievous child, Barker's childhood pranks resulted in an unusual punishment; to accompany his father to "work" and spend long hours in recording sessions or at rehearsals. This "punishment" was perfect for the musically inclined young Barker. The experience enhanced Barker's musical appreciation, and he was fortunate to meet Jamaica's top musicians including Don Drummond, the entire Skatalites Band, Babba Brooks, Bryon Lee (producer and The Dragonnaires' band leader), Duke Reid "The Trojan", Sir Coxone Downbeat - Clement Dodd, and many others. | ![]() Home: www.bingiebarker.com |

Concrete Jungle was born in 1991 out of a jam-session, at which the love for jamaican rhythms soon evoked the desire to play regularly as a band. From the beginning there was the ideal not to play any cover-versions of famous artists (as is often the case), but to develop an own approach. Thus was born Urban Roots Reggae: groovy, sensual and melodious music that maintains the connection to Roots Music of the seventies.
After starting off playing gigs in Darmstadt, Germany and the Rhein-Main region, the band plays across Germany today: the Schwimmbadclub in Heidelberg; Bongo Bongo Sunsplash Festival; Chiemsee-Reggae-Summer in Bavaria (alongside Burning Spear, Anthony B., Luciano, etc.) and also as supporting band to Iqulah, just to name a few.

From their very beginning in 1993 Dr. Ring Ding never was just a great ska-band. They also play roots-rock-reggae, raggamuffin and sometimes their sound even gets funky. On Summerjam 1999 Dr. Ring Ding & the Senior Allstars showed up as a great backing-band to other reggae singers. Rumours say that Dr. Ring Ding a.k.a. Richie Senior also works for the radio station "WDR Funkhaus Europa" as a presenter on a show called "Ambiente" (Shhht, no one is supposed to know his real name...). The other members are: André Meyer, Arne Piri, Bernd Westhoff, Markus Dassmann, Oliver Wienand, Thomas Hoppe. Founded in 1988 Dubblestandart started producing experimental dub tapes and so called hard-core reggae live-shows with Christoph Kaiaba, a.k.a. Rootscontroller on the mike. The dub scene in Austria was virtually nonexistent at the time, so it was Dubblestandart-Rootscontrollers doing their thing, basing everything they did on reggae and dub. Inspired by people like the Upsetters' black-ark sound, I-Roy, On-U-Sound, Jah Shaka, and the rest of the reggae & dubadelics, Dubblestandart developed a different kind of reggae - one influenced by post-new wave and psychedelic pop. They have worked as a backing band for Jamaican Dub Poet Lilian Allen on her tour 1993 through Austria, Germany and Switzerland and in 1992 performed live on stage at the Rockhouse Vienna together with Lee Scratch Perry, following a number of recording sessions at the DS-Studios, the so-called Controller Station.

The Band was founded in september 2001 in Dornbirn (Rheintal/Bodensee). They started as a three men group and did not change a lot, apart from musicians who supported us just for fun on some gigs, they are still "the small reggae-band" ! They play cover-songs composed by Bob Marley, Inner-Circle and UB-40 specially arranged for a small reggae-group, however nearly half of their program is composed by their lead-singer and guitar-player Joseph. The LindWall-Reggae-Band plays with a simple set-up - guitar, base, percussion and voices. All members have been well expirienced on stage for many years. contact: LindWall@gmx.at |

Hot riddims are meeting a dusty, revolutionary Mariachi band chased through the streets of Havana by pumping Samba beats. The Radikal Sunflowers will lead you directamente to a hot tropical beach bar, serve an ice-cooled Mojito and invite to dance with mucho swing. Chopped-off Ska-guitars meet screaming jazzy saxofons and electronic drums & basses. Spanish and english lyrics tell stories of liberty, love, live and some critical reflections. On their trip through Latin america the Radikal Sunflowers mix jamaican Reggae and Dancehall Rythms with Jazz, Breakbeatz, Samba, Dub and Cumbia. Even Hip-Hop is part of their obstinate, extremly dancable music. And by the way accoustic instruments are flirting with electronic beatz. The Live Performance of the Radikal Sunflowers contains a lot of self-composed songs and some individual interpretations of Jazz classics like Summertime, Minnie the Moocher or Night in Tunesia.

Rottsgaia is not what you might call a typical reggaeband it's more like a percussion-band with strong reggaevibes. The first contact beteween the three basic members of the group came into being in 1997, when Volke Hardebusch paticipated in one of the numerous drum-workshops led by Ulf Heße. A few months later Tim Schwarzpaul began to learn the art of djembe-drumming from "Papa U". From this time on the three rastafarians grew together, both musically ans spiritually. Coming outta Munich. The Roots Rockers combine Roots Reggae, Dancehall, Ska, and soulful Hip Hop to their own sort of music with German and English Lyrics. They started their carreer in 1995 and refounded in 2000. From thereon they started playing gigs all over Germany, Austria and Switzerland. As they run their own Soundsystem, the Live-Shows are quite similar to a Soundsystem-Gig: They produce their sound in their own studio and then they cut the finished riddims on dubplates (with their own cutting-machine, of course). UweKaa is the Singjay/MC, Andybee the Producer/Engineer and DJ, Jazzus spins the dubs, and Martin and Dominik are the backing-vocalists.

A nine-man group from Austria, including a brass section, a compact rhythm section and a charismatic front man, Roots Vibration tries to bring the Caribbean to the "Alpine Republic". Roots Vibration fired up prime-time crowds at the renowned Wiesen Sunsplash Festival in 1991, 93, 97 and again in 1997, and their Jamaican colleagues could hardly believe that the Roots reggae sound was being produced by white musicians from Austria. Following their huge success in Wiesen, the Roots were hired for supporting gigs with Burning Spear, The Wailers, Misty in Roots, Aswad, Yellowman, Hans Söllner, Human League and many other groups.

Seeed is probably one of the most famous German bands on this page. This is how singer Enuff describes their origins:
"Until the summer of '98 (after and beside a lot of other bands and projects) we just dubbed along with some guys in the rehearsal room. One day in June whilst Germany was messing it nil-three versus Croatia, Frank and I at the Buju concert at Tempodrom agreed on a new idea: we wanted to found a mobile Reggae task force, kinda mix of New Orleans marching style and DUB. In the end SEEED was what came out of it... Alfi Trowers, the percussion player, for instance just showed up at the first demo session. DJ Illvibe and my brother Basti also play with Lychee Lassi some instrumental Hip Hop stuff. Actually most of us have been knowing each other since school days.".

The Sixth Revelation originally come from Montego Bay/Jamaica in the early eighties but are now very often around Europe. The band describes its style as roots reggae with raggamuffin influences and elements of European pop music. With the beginning of this century in 2001 a group called Zu' Luciano Band was formed in Sicily (the biggest Italian island). Zu' Luciano himself is an original sicilian reggae-singer and his activity in D.J. sections or sound-system with other singers became well-known within Italy. When Luciano met Jahro' (one of the first i-talian rastaman composer and singer) and Franko with his gears (a keyboard player and sound-engineer with a digital portable recording studio) they began to perform a reggae show in festivals and in concerts. In the summer of 2001 G.Giuliano (bass) and Francisco Castellana (sax) joined the band. Actually you can hear some songs of the band in the reggae radios show of Holland, Italy, Germany and in some international internet reggae radios show.
